Demos demos and more demos. I thought I would take a few minutes today and talk about a demo that came out on Thursday, its Nova Logic's Black Hawk Down. Nova Logic has made other FPS games such as Delta Force so they are no stranger to the FPS style. Black Hawk Down takes place in Somalia and leads player though out a variety of missions that culminate with the ill fated day in Mogadishu. The demo was a multiplayer team death match. It gave us a nice glimpse at what we can expect. Personally for one reason or another I never liked the Delta Force series of games. Not sure why....

This demo I do like very much. Why? Lots of things. First of all the graphics are pretty good. The engine is developed by Nova Logic and it can use the advance pixel/vertex shaders of DX8. Although I was not sure I saw any such effects I did notice how well they brought the war torn city of Mogadishu to "life". The textures we very rich and added to the setting. If you looked into the sun you screen when really bright, there were nice smoke/fire effects as well as night/day time settings. You have 4 weapons as your basic, a sniper, a pistol, nodes and a CAR-15. The CAR has a limited scope but has a laser sight and can fire in single shot or auto. The sniper is a M21 which is ooohh so effective. The pistol is like other pistol effective when use as a last defense weapon but not the primary weapon of choice. The nads also are nice to blow out some camping whore. In all these weapons work very well together. The map also features a number of mounted weapons that can be used to deal out some serious fire. The map its self is cool. Tons of cracks and crevices to hide in. This will give you a taste of what real city fighting is like. One time I tried to get back to my group and it took me a long time to wade through all of the snipers/enemies. You also can get up on the roof in many places. This has a lot of advantages needless to say :) The ambient sounds are very well done. You guy can kneel or go into the prone position. You can lean and shoot which is useful when you are pinned down. Finally last but by no means least is that you can ride in the helos and the HumVees! These you can not pilot as they follow a set path, still its nice to have support in the air and on ground. Although trying to hit a guy on the ground while your in a moving helo is hard.

But no demo is perfect. The sounds are a bit weak for the guns I feel. They have two mounted nade launchers that can be a bit spammy (I got 14 kills in a row before they took me out when I found the first one). Reload? Cant find the bind for it :( For a demo it was not too bad but at times I had a strange lag. Plus I feel that we can use a break from the military theme for a short while (SOF2, Battlefeild1942, RtCW, AA, Splinter Cell, Raven Sheild, CS)

The game is due out next month. From what I understand it will also have a co-op mode, KoTH, CTF and other game types. So it looks like Nova Logic has a solid hit here and I am looking forward playing it. I leave you with some screenies...

I have nice flickering of jibberish across the screen when I'm in a helo or in zoom.. and just while walking around at times. I have a gf2gts at the moment.. but I think that may end up changing...hmm. now if I could only find the ladders.
